Mom Trip 2016 | Colorado

If you have been following along with my blog for the last three years, you should know that every year my sisters and I try to plan a trip for the weekend that my mom passed away. My sister came up with the idea and it makes perfect sense. This way we can look forward to the weekend spent together as a family instead of having to dread the day we lost mom.

This year, my little sister really wanted to go to the mountains so we decided to go to Denver. My grandpa (my mom's dad) lives near Denver and mom used to ski Vail mountain all the time since my grandpa worked there. We even went quite a few times as kids, but we have not been there in some time. Our plan was to spend some time in Denver and then head to the mountains for a few days with my grandpa.

Between me, my older sister, my younger sister and my dad, we all had different routes to get us into Denver. My older sister, her husband, her kids and my dad decided to all drive together from Minnesota taking a few extra days to get there. My little sister and her husband chose to drive from Texas and make some stops along the way as a road trip. I decided to fly and have someone pick me up in order to not have to take as many days off work. I ended up with an early morning flight on Friday and the rest of my family was not planning on getting into town until that afternoon. My older sister was planning on staying at a friend's house who lives in the Denver area and luckily she was able to pick me up from the airport and let me hang out at her house until everyone else showed up. When we got to her house, I actually ended up taking a three hour nap because I felt like garbage after having to wake up so early and because the medication I am on makes me super nauseous. It felt great to sleep and I was powered up again once my family arrived. We spent the rest of Friday just hanging out and then went to dinner with my sister's friends to a burger place in Denver. They had all kinds of fun and different toppings to try, even though I kept it super simple. Then, those of us staying in a hotel headed to the hotel for the night.

Saturday we woke up, got caribou coffee (yes!) and headed out to the local water park. Our plan was to stay there until about dinner time and then head to the mountains. The water park was surprisingly empty so we did not have crazy long lines at all. The concrete was super hot though and by the end of the day my feet were burning and I really wished I had remembered to bring my water shoes. It was fun hanging out with my niece and nephew and also being able to run off for the bigger slides too.
^^My nephew and my brother in law going down the slide together!^^
^^Richard texted me a picture of our location saying that we needed to go check out the pepsi pool. It made me laugh and the pepsi pool ended up being the wave pool so we checked it out. The waves were ginormous and I took my nephew out there with me and we quickly learned that they were too intense for him.^^

When we were done at the water park, we packed up our stuff and headed for the mountains. My grandpa's house was a little more than two hours away from Denver so we planned on stopping in a small town in the middle for pizza. My older sister had been here before and knew she wanted to get their pizza again. The pizza did not disappoint. Their specialty is to have pizza with a really thick crust that you can then eat with honey. I was a little hesitant about ordering that type of pizza but it ended up being really good so I am glad I did. Even if all I did was eat cheese pizza without any honey. After dinner, we walked around the town a bit before getting on the road again.
The drive through the mountains made me really nervous, especially with my dad back seat driving and my sister's brakes making funny noises. But we made it safely to my grandpa's house and then went to bed early.

We spent the next two days in the mountains at Vail and I took so many pictures I will have to do a separate post on that. When we were done with the mountains, we headed back into Denver for one final day. I went with my older sister, her family and my dad to the Denver Zoo. They had a fun elephant show there and we got to see the elephant up close and he even went for a swim. It was fun to watch. When we were done with the zoo, we ate lunch at noodles & company (yum!) and then they dropped me off at the airport about 5 hours before my flight. They wanted to get on the road and head back to Minnesota so I was fine with waiting at the airport. I was able to get a lot done in those few hours.
Those two days spent in Denver were a lot of fun and our more relaxing days. We were able to hang out with just us and do our own thing before seeing my grandpa. I will have more of our adventures tomorrow!
