Vanity Remake

I have had this vanity for more than two years. I use it every day and had always wanted to paint it white because everything else in our bedroom is white wood. I never had the courage to do it until now and I am so excited about it. I read a few DIY blogs about people who fix their house up by doing a bunch of different DIY projects. I wish I could do things like that, but in our apartment there is not a lot that I can fix up. So I thought it would be fun to start with something small like my vanity so that someday in the future when we are back in a house, I can fix up my own house. That day will be here soon enough (I hope at least).

Here is what I started with. I also painted the mirror here, but we will get to that in a bit. I forgot to take a picture of what it looked like before I painted the mirror, but it is close enough.
I followed a tutorial by Young House Love about how to paint furniture. They are by far my favorite blog and if you do not read their blog you should. So first thing I did was gather my supplies.
I need paint, primer, a foam roller, a paint brush, a sander, sanding paper, a mask and other painting supplies.
Per their instructions, I used an oil based primer and latex paint in a semi-gloss finish. One thing that I did not realize before I started is that if you use an oil based paint you need something other than water to clean of your brushes/rollers/skin. So we had to make another trip to buy some mineral spirits so that I could wash my brushes. Funny thing is I realized this after I had painted my mirror in the middle of an ice storm so we did not want to go anywhere to get some and I ended up going to work the next day with paint on my hands. True story.

The first step was to sand my vanity. I borrowed a sander from my co-worker (thanks Laurie) and took my vanity outside on our "patio" to start sanding. Richard was like the paparazzi taking my picture because he was excited for me to be doing this all on my own-he is usually the person who does this kind of stuff. I wore a mask so that I did not end up inhaling anything so don't mind that.
I could pretty much only sand the top of it because the rest of it was too hard to get to. Then I started priming. This was by far the hardest step. So much so that after sanding and priming my arm hurt so bad that night with really intense nerve pain that I could not sleep. No pain no gain.
I used a plastic drop cloth so that I would not accidentally get paint on the ground. I am not very graceful when it comes to painting, or anything for that matter. I had paint everywhere.

Once the primer was dry we brought it in to our living room where it sat for the next week. I finally got around to painting it this last weekend. In total I used one coat of primer and three coats of paint. Since I could not sand most of it, I needed more paint to cover up the primer because it was all splotchy.

I painted the mirror for the top of my vanity as well. It started as a cream-ish color that I painted white. All I did was tape the inside of the mirror, lightly sand it, and added one coat of primer and two coats of paint.
But here is the final result. Even though it is not a super impressive color or anything I am still really proud that I did it with little help from my husband. Now if I could do something about those annoying cream colored walls I would be an even happier girl.
Here is a side by side comparison of the before and after just because it is fun to look at.
Now I have confidence in whatever my next DIY project may be!

February Review

Today I am reporting without a weekend update because we did not do anything this last weekend that was worthy of a blog post. Richard studied and I cleaned and then we watched Peter Pan. We both got a lot done, but I am not going to bore you with those details

February will be coming to a close this week and it sure did go quickly. We have stayed pretty busy, but have also had a lot of time just the two of us. It was a good balance.

-We attended a super bowl party at a friends house where they deep fried a bunch of food, plus we had all the amazing food that people brought.

-We visited a hibachi restaurant with our friends.

-Richard and I went on two dates at two different Mexican restaurants in one weekend.

-We had an ice storm that gave Richard two days off school and I had a day and a half off work.

-We started celebrating Mardi Gras with a friend of Richard's and spent the day relaxing by the bayou.

-I spent a lot of time catching up with cleaning and organizing while working on different craft projects around the house. I am feeling pretty accomplished with everything I got done. Now the goal is to keep up with everything. We will see how that goes.

And the end of this month will be spent with some of my extended family for Mardi Gras 2014! So excited for Thursday to get here!

Taking Stock

I was reading one of my really good friend Heather's blog  and she inspired me to join in the fun by answering these questions. It was harder to think of things than I thought but it is a fun little exercise for me!

making: A photobook on my computer. And I need to be done by Tuesday. Ah!

cooking: A lot of crockpot meals. I love how easy they are.

drinking: Lots and lots of water. I have been keeping up with my goal!

reading: The second book of the Divergent series. If you have not read these yet you need to ASAP!

wanting: More time at home so that I can cross things off my to-do list.

looking: For more inspiration on pinterest for idea around the house. Just little updates here and there.

sewing: Nothing. But wishing I had the confidence to try something.

wishing: I could sleep better at night. Tossing and turning is never fun.

enjoying: Working out with my husband. Operation get healthy is in full effect!

waiting: For it to be April so I can see my family again. 5 months without them is too long.

liking: That I have been keeping busy. It is nice to feel busy instead of lonely.

wondering: What the future holds for us. It is so hard for me to not know what may happen in the next year.

loving: All the time I have spent with my husband in the last month.

hoping: That I have a productive weekend. So much to get done!

marveling: At how quickly time goes by. I still can't believe we have been in Louisiana for a year and a half!

smelling: Hot Chocolate. Probably because it is what I am drinking.

needing: To buy a gift for a baby shower I am going to tomorrow. Nothing like last minute shopping.

wearing: Jeans, heels, a tank top and a cardigan. Love casual Fridays.

following: Too many TV shows.

noticing: How slow my work day goes, but how quick my evening are. Wish it was the other way around.

knowing: That I need to keep working to achieve my monthly goals.

thinking: About all our plans this year. It is going to be a busy year!

bookmarking: Recipes to try. Sometimes I wish I liked a larger variety of food.

opening: A can of paint. I have to keep working on my project.

giggling: At my puppy. She brings me so much joy.

feeling: Excited to celebrate Mardi Gras next weekend! I'm excited for some extended family to come visit us!

February's Past

I started this last month, where I will look back through the years month by month. So here is what we were up to in all the February's past!

February 2009
-I started looking for a job as a nanny to work starting in the summer.
-My little sister started playing softball at the high school and needed a temporary replacement for her preschool job. Since I worked there before I moved to college, I offered to fill in. On Tuesdays and Thursdays I had a later class in Minneapolis and could not get there in time so my mom would pick me up from college to bring me back to my home town to work. She did this twice a week for 3 months.
-We celebrated Valentine's day for pretty much the only time in our relationship. Not a fan. But we celebrated by Richard making me dinner that we enjoyed together. And when you are 18/19 years old and not living together it is considered a date.
-We went to Afton Alps, which is a local ski resort. We went to make sure we both remembered how to ski for our upcoming trip to Vermont.

February 2010
-School was pretty busy during this time so not a whole lot happened.
-We did go with Richard's family to The Hot Air Affair in Richard's home town. They put this on every year in the winter where they have a bunch of hot air balloons that all sail (do hot air balloons sail?) off together. It is always so colorful.
-I also found this picture of Paisley playing in all the snow.

February 2011
- I do not have a single picture from this month. Well I do have pictures, but they are of a house that I babysat for because they had some fun decor. So apparently I did a lot of babysitting this month.
-I was also deep into wedding planning. We had a meeting with a florist where they quoted us at close to three times our budget for flowers. I am so glad we made the wise decision to not go with her.

February 2012
-My life was consumed with studying for my Actuary exam. All day every day.
-And I found these pictures. Not sure what we were doing but I thought they were cute.

And February 2013 can be found here!

So February is not the most exciting month because it was usually deep into the semester so it was focused on school. But I am still glad I am doing this because I am so far behind on my scrapbooking that I am forgetting what was happening in my life. It is fun to look back and see!
